KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Dozens of people gathered Friday night at a prayer vigil for Kansas City’s sixth homicide victim of 2013.

The vigil took place in the same spot where 24-year-old Demon Woolridge was shot and killed Tuesday – in a liquor store parking lot near 75th and Troost.

Police have charged 23-year-old Raymond Douglas with second-degree murder in Woolridge's death. Officers say Douglas started to fight with Woolridge, who then shot him and stole his car.

“He saw Demon running and pointed the gun and shot him in the back as he was running,” Woolridge’s mother, Stephaine Woolridge, said. “He was trying to keep him from shooting his brothers.”

The AdHoc Group Against Crime organized Friday night’s vigil.

"It gives me a lot of peace," Stephanie Woolridge said of the vigil. "It makes me happy to know that my child was loved, and he wasn't a criminal. He didn't sell drugs, didn't do drugs. All he ever did was go to work, take care of his girlfriend and his baby."

Douglas is being held on a $250,000 bond.
