OLATHE, Kan. - A Leawood woman is accused of stealing money from an elementary school's PTO fund.
Johnson County Prosecutors charged Sandra Huddleston with one count of felony theft.
The co-presidents of the Valley Park Elementary School alerted parents to the theft in a May letter.
"As your co-presidents, we have struggled with the right words to tell you about a recent discovery related to Valley Park PTO funds. Recently, we went to the bank and learned that a significant amount of our funds were stolen, depleting our PTO account. Minutes after discovery we immediately went to the Overland Park Police Department and filed a police report. The exact amount is not yet known, but preliminary estimates are near $30,000,'' the letter stated.
Huddleston was arrested Thursday and is expected in court Thursday afternoon.
She served as treasurer for the school's PTO during the 2012-13 school year.
It was her first term as treasurer, according to PTO co-president Jade Van Slyke.
Huddleston had a child attending the school.
VanSlyke, told 41 Action News today the school's teachers, staff and parents have been very supportive of the PTO during the investigation.
An insurance policy has paid the PTO $25,000 and the group expects to get the remaining $5,000 soon, VanSlyke said.
She said the school community had been very supportive during the investigation.
