OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - A Johnson County elementary school will be closed Friday as staff works with the county health department to prevent further spread of an illness that has made several students sick.

According to staff at Brookridge Elementary School, a significant number of students were out sick Thursday with a gastrointestinal illness.

Brookridge is part of the Shawnee Mission School District. It is located at 9920 Lowell in Overland Park.

The custodial staff will disinfect the school Friday to try and keep the bug from spreading.

School officials ask that if any students exhibit symptoms -- including vomiting and diarrhea -- they are kept home until they're symptom-free for at least 24 hours.
