OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - A local band director is getting some national attention.
Daniel Kirk is director of bands at Blue Valley West High School, and on Thursday, Kirk was honored by the National Association for Musical Education with its George N Parks Award for leadership in music education.
Kirk says he’s humbled by the award, though is quick to note others played just as important a role.
“I have fantastic students, and I’m thrilled to work with them each day,” said Kirk. “They inspire me, so it’s easy to work hard for great people.”
During the past two years, Kirk has grown his music program by nearly 30 percent. According to a release, Kirk teaches the Symphonic Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Honors Music Theory and Music Theory, as well as oversees the Red and Silver Brigade Marching Band and helps with Concert Band and Freshmen Band.
