(NBC) - How time flies. Summer is on the home stretch now and it's almost back to school time. Besides shopping for school supplies and clothing, there are some apps that your student may find pretty helpful this year.

Organization is the key and the iHomework app is a must have for students. It lets them keep track of their classes, record homework, grades, to-dos, teacher information and more. The app syncs everything between the iPhone, iPod, iPad and Mac.

Writing is a huge part of every subject, at every grade and finding and spelling the right word is a critical skill. The free Dictionary and Thesaurus app from dictionary.com is great for Android phones, the iPad and iPhone.

Research and fact-finding are also skills every student needs and the very cool - and free - Wikipanion app for the iPad and iPhone provides instant access to encyclopedia-like facts. Students shouldn't just copy and paste - teachers can spot that in a second - but they can use this app to get to exactly what they need to know… fast.
