STET, Mo. - The end is near for a Missouri school district east of Kansas City. The Stet R-XV School District in Ray County, will be gone after June.

Right now, it’s FFA week at Stet. Kids are busy looking at animals and showing off their own. It’s a week they always look forward to, but this year it’s different.

"I went to school here since kindergarten and it's just pretty much like another home for me," said freshman Sean Utley.

Because classes are the size of families.

"We have six total in my sophomore class," said Dillan Hall. "You know everybody's name. You walk down the aisle and smile at everybody and they all just smile back," said Hall.

Lately the faces holding those smiles have been dwindling.

"It's approximately 62 students," said school board president Russell Couch.

The school board saw the writing on the wall.

"The future with less kids and less money requires us to take an alternative action and that is to close the school," said Couch.

He says it’s a difficult but necessary decision.

"Based on the betterment of the student body and our community, we chose to make that move," said Couch.

Kids will be divided up among five neighboring districts. It's like splitting up a family. They're sad, but ready.

"We'll all still be living in the same houses, so we'll get to see each other and hang out after school and stuff, so that's what we get to look forward to," said Hall.

In April, people in the Stet district will vote on the annexation plan, which will finalize plans to send kids to other districts.

Sixteen people work for Stet and will lose their jobs.
