SW Missouri school board to reconsider book ban

STOCKTON, Missouri - A southwest Missouri school board is reconsidering its decision to ban an award-winning novel that contains sexual jokes and references.
On Wednesday night, the Stockton School Board will hear from citizens before possibly voting on whether Sherman Alexie's "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian" should be allowed in the high school library.
The American Library Association had asked the board to reconsider its April decision, which followed a parent's complaint about the book's content.
The novel is the semi-autobiographical story of a boy who leaves his school on the Spokane Indian Reservation to attend an all-white high school. It won the 2007 National Book Award for young people's literature.
It has been banned elsewhere, including in Oregon.
