KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Duchesne Clinic in Kansas City, Kan., is celebrating its 13th anniversary helping women in Wyandotte County detect and treat breast cancer. The clinic helps low-income women get free breast and cervical cancer screenings.

The Komen Foundation raises money year-round to offer mammograms to all women who make less than $23,925 per individual or less than $48,375 per family of four, and are between the ages of 35 and 49.

Last year, Komen funded more than 2,000 mammograms in Kansas and Missouri. Of those, 68 of the women had never before received a mammogram. Eleven of them were diagnosed with breast cancer.

Nurses at the Duchesne clinic tell us without Komen grants many women in our area would never have access to early detection, which can save their lives.

"Low income, no access to care, language barriers. A lot of things that really put up a wall to these women getting the care they need and deserve. This is a great opportunity for us as a clinic to get early detection and the care that otherwise they wouldn’t receive,” said Amber Eastabrooks, head nurse at the Duchesne clinic.
