CHICAGO (AP) - Want to know your chances of dying in the next 10 years? If you're over 50, a new mortality index can give you a clue.

Bad signs include getting winded walking several blocks, smoking, and having trouble pushing a chair across the room.

San Francisco researchers created the test and say it is mostly for doctors.  It can help them decide whether costly health screenings or medical procedures are worth the risk for patients unlikely to live 10 more years.

The research was published Tuesday in the Journal of the American Medical Association.
