KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Police have located the mother of a 2-year-old boy found wandering the streets early Saturday morning in Kansas City, Kan.
Shelly Gilmore found the child wandering near 53 rd and Swartz in the cold early morning hours.
Gilmore said the boy had no clothes on when she found him.
“I caught him out of the corner of my eye when he hit the street light walking. Then I noticed it was a kid, and I backed up, opened by door, and was so cold, he ran to get into the car as fast as he could,” Gilmore told 41 Action News on Saturday.
Gilmore took him to a nearby fire station and called police.
According to Wyandotte County investigators, the child’s mother did not call until nearly 11 a.m.
Our cameras were there as investigators went to the mother’s home and showed her a picture of the child to confirm his identity.
“A lot of times, he just runs across the street without even looking,” said Candace Conway who lives in the neighborhood. “He’s so little.”
The child remains in protective custody while authorities continue to investigate.
