600 teams to compete in the American Royal BBQ Contest

The Godfather of BBQ, Johnny Trigg of Alvarado, TX Has placed 2nd in this competition twice.  Trigg, 2012 inductee To the BBQ hall of fame, is a judge on BBQ Pitmasters on Destination America ( TLC).

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - More than 600 teams from across the country have swarmed to Kansas City for the annual American Royal BBQ Contest.

Among the list of competitors is the self-proclaimed winningest man in BBQ, Myron Mixon of Jack's Old South BBQ based in Unadilla, Ga.

He's a three time world champion and has over 200 grand champions under his apron, and says the American Royal is competition he looks forward to all year long.

"You have the best of the best here, and your really got to bring your A game,' Mixon said.  "But when it comes down to it, it's all about having fun.  Plus it's American."

Saturday will be the invitational competition where the top 100 teams will face off.  Sunday will be the open competition where more than 600 teams will compete for the top prize.
