SMITHVILLE, Missouri - A problem at Smithville Lake in Smithville, Missouri, could interrupt summer fun on Memorial Day weekend, one of the busiest weekends of the year at the lake.
Little Platte Park Beach at Smithville Lake was closed on Wednesday as a precaution.
Clay County parks officials are testing the water at the beach to determine if it’s contaminated.
On Thursday Clay County parks officials will know if the water is contaminated and if Little Platte Park Beach will have to be closed through the Memorial Day weekend.
Charlie Barr, Clay County Parks Director, explained that one of the sewage retention ponds began spilling-over into the lake because of recent heavy rains.
“We’re closing the beach there as a precaution until we have test results of the water,” explained Barr.
There is another beach that is open at Smithville Lake.
Except for Little Platte Park Beach, all lake-water at Smithville is safe for swimming.
If the beach has to be closed over the Memorial Day weekend, regular visitors at the lake say it won’t bother them.
