Local charity fights to survive amid economic downturn

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - A local charity is worried it might have to close its door forever.

Compassion in Action Center gives away clothing, toys, and food to people in need. But the nonprofit organization has seen its donations drop ever since the economy took a downturn.

While the charity's Independence, Mo., headquarters were donated, it's struggling to pay its utility bills. But those involved are not giving up.

"Of course we have big dreams, we want to do a community garden, we want to put a playground out back for the kids and just help improve the community and do a lot of growing," said Marissa Carter, executive director for the center.

The organization is run completely by volunteers and has helped more than 1,200 people.
