KANSAS CITY, Mo. - You can hear the joyful noise of the congregation pouring out of Second Baptist Church out on 39th street. The hundreds of people here celebrate well over a century's worth of blessings, marking their 150th anniversary.
Started on the banks of the Missouri River in a 'Straggler's Camp' in 1863, a group of people looking for hope turned to God. Fifteen decades later, that same church is looking forward to a major expansion. Pastor Vernon Howard said they've survived the civil war and the loss of one church to fire together by the grace of God.
Congressman Emmanuel Cleaver gave a sermon at their celebratory service on Sunday. Worship services at Second Baptist Church start every Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
