KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Some Kansas City, Mo., Council members want to create a new transportation-development district to help fund a new Main Street streetcar.
A council committee on Thursday approved a resolution allowing the city to seek court approval to create such a district. The district would collect a tax from the owners of properties on either side of the initial route, which would run from the City Market to Union Station.
The estimated cost of the project is around $100 million.
The plan would allow the route to be expanded in the future.
The city hopes to apply for federal grants to cover one-fourth of the costs, with the remaining coming from rider fees and property and sales taxes.
If the circuit court approves the new district, Kansas City voters must also give it the green light.
