KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - A woman and a young girl were killed in an apartment fire in Kansas City, Kan., Saturday morning.
Fire officials say the fire broke out at 5:45 a.m. When firefighters arrived, the woman, identified by police as Brandi S. Johnson, 34, was dead and a 2-year-old girl, identified as Amiyah McClenton, was suffering from critical injuries, including smoke inhalation and burns. McClenton later died at a hospital.
Officials say the child was Johnson’s niece.
Fire crews said they believe the fire started on the upper floors of the apartment. An investigation is ongoing.
The American Red Cross said they are helping 26 people who were displaced with lodging, food and clothing.
