KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Days after a girl was found malnourished and trapped in a closet in Kansas City, local agencies say they've seen an increase in people wanting to become foster parents for the little girl.
"That's just not how the system works," said Joe Beck with the MIdwest Foster Care and Adoption Association. "So we try to encourage people to recognize what it was that stirred inside you that made you want to help."
Representatives at CASA's local chapter say child abuse cases have risen a staggering 30 percent in Jackson County and 40 percent in Johnson County in recent years. Beck adds that around 1,500 area children are in foster care in just 200 foster homes.
