KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The popular coupon site Groupon is partnering with a local homeless shelter to raise money for Kansas City families.
Sheffield Place is a shelter and rehabilitation center for homeless women and their children.
Sabina Joslyn has been at Sheffield Place since November 2012. Her son, Jason, was born drug-exposed, so Joslyn was sent to a rehabilitation center. The center suggested she stay at Sheffield Place. Now, she and Jason have a place to live as Joslyn attends parenting classes, job training and learns life skills so she can eventually live independently.
“I'm actually going to school,” she said. “Hopefully I'll get my GED soon and I plan on going for child development. I want to have my own day care.”
Families like Joslyn’s depend on Sheffield Place’s support to recover from any previous trauma they may have experienced.
“The goal of Sheffield Place is to empower the homeless families that come here to heal from the trauma they've experienced in their lives and help them be self-sufficient,” said David Hanzlick, director of program and development for Sheffield Place.
Money raised through the Groupon campaign that began Thursday at midnight will go to bedding that Sheffield Place provides for the families. The campaign lasts until Sept. 4.
Donations can be made in $10 increments at www.groupon.com/deals/sheffield-place
This is the second time Sheffield Place has partnered with Groupon as part of its grassroots efforts to support local communities.
