KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Construction was scheduled to last until at least the middle of December, but now both north and southbound lanes of U.S. Highway 169 will be back open by early November.

Both directions of 169 between Wheeler Airport and Route 9 were shutdown starting July 14 at midnight. The detours were estimated to affect 35,000 drivers.

Missouri Department of Transportation officials credit the contractor and nice weather for the early completion.

Crews have been working on the wall on the east side of the northbound lanes. MoDOT officials said a total shutdown was necessary to give crews enough room to make the repairs. The $10.1 million dollar project is also fixing drainage issues around the area of roadway.

For the next couple weeks crews will pave lanes, finish the drainage work and add guard rails in time for it to open a month before the expected Dec. 16 completion date.
