KANSAS CITY, Missouri - The winner of a televised interior design contest is adding ambiance to a soup kitchen in downtown Kansas City.
Jennifer Bertrand of Olathe won Home and Garden Television's "Design Star" competition. Now, she is focusing her decorating efforts on a 2,200-square-foot dining room.
The hall is an effort of the Downtown Council and Episcopal Community Services. It's set to open in September.
Bertrand says she's "trying to make it the happiest community kitchen ever" and design it like she would for the rest of her clients.
The dining facility has seating for 96 people and is decorated in Gucci-inspired shades of burnt orange and avocado green.
The Kansas City Star reported that the new kitchen and dining facility shares a two-level building with reStart, a social service agency for the homeless.
