KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Kansas City Missouri Police Department honored the 119 officers who were killed while on duty throughout the department's history on Thursday.
The public memorial service began at 10 a.m. at the Regional Police Academy Sports Field at 6885 NE Pleasant Valley Road.
The KCPD Color Guard performed the 21-gun salute. There were also bagpipers and a flyover by the police helicopter. A riderless horse was also on hand to represent the 119 who died in the line of duty.
The first officer was killed in 1881 and the last in 2001. Flags for each of the officers were displayed. Dispatchers read the names of those officers, one at a time, for the 119 hours leading up to the service.
