KANSAS CITY, Mo. - After months of waiting, a sentimental piece of equipment was returned to a Missouri soldier today.
Specialist Eric Garcia was shot in the head while serving in Afghanistan in May of last year, his helmet saved his life.
He was wearing the same helmet during a 2008 deployment when two of his friends were killed during a mission.
There are two white stars from an American flag stitched on his helmet, representing his fallen friends.
"I don't see it as a souvenir. I see it as a second chance. It will be very special to me to have it back," said Spc. Eric Garcia.
Even after everything he's been through Garcia is hoping to go back to active duty.
