KANSAS CITY, Missouri - Authorities have identified the man killed early Sunday morning when his car apparently left the roadway, struck a tree and caught fire.
It happened just after 1:50 a.m. near 101st Terrace and Holmes Road.
Firefighters found the dead man, identified as 24-year-old Christopher S. Pittman, of Kansas City, in the driver’s seat of the burning vehicle. They say it appears the car was traveling eastbound just east of Holmes when it left the roadway and struck a tree. The vehicle caught on fire and Pittman was unable to extricate himself.
Pittman -- the sole occupant of the vehicle -- was pronounced dead at the scene.
It was the second fatality crash Sunday morning in Kansas City, making it the ninth such incident this year, compared to six at this time last year. Another man died around midnight Sunday in a two-car crash near 18th Street and Grand Boulevard.
