KANSAS CITY, Missouri - The Kansas City Zoo is putting the final touches on the 19,000 square foot Helzberg Penguin Plaza exhibit.
Four different species of penguins will make their Kansas City debut Friday morning.
The largest part of the exhibit is the Penguin Ice Paradise which will house 30 birds.
You will see King, Gentoo, and Southern Rockhopper penguins swim in a 100,000 gallon pool of salt water.
This area is kept at a chilling 45 degrees and features a large underwater viewing area.
"They're really going to enjoy this backside of the pool," said Zoo Director Randy Wisthoff. "You can just see the antics of them, they all go one way and they turn around and chase back the other way."
The exhibit also has a smaller area called Penguin Coast that houses Humboldt penguins that come from a more temperate region.
The Humboldt penguin pool extends outside. The penguins can swim under a bridge to go outside or when the weather is nice, the glass walls fold and open the exhibit up.
