KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A 3-year-old boy is now in the custody of his aunt after he was found wandering by himself in a busy intersection in Westport.
The young boy was found in the 4000 block of Mill Street, after crossing Southwest Trafficway. He was wearing only a diaper.
A neighbor called police after seeing the boy on the news and told police where he lived.
“I think anyone would have done it,” Jackie Lima said. She doesn’t have any kids of her own, but on Thursday, her motherly instincts kicked in. “I didn’t even look to see if I was going to get hit, I just ran right after him,” Lima said.
Police took him into custody until they could find the boy's relatives. He lives just a few blocks from where he was found.
“He was saying he was hungry. He took some jugs of water while we were playing in the grass and said he just wanted water,” Lima recalled.
His aunt told 41 Action News that police told her to take him and pack a bag so he could stay with her as police continue to investigate how he got away.
His mother was detained briefly, but was not arrested and is now back at her home. So far no charges have been filed.
