PARKVILLE, Mo. - The Kansas City area is fortunate to have its share of heroes. Unfortunately, we lost a hero to ALS this past week.
In September of 2010, NBC Action News introduced you to “The other Bruce Edwards.” This Bruce Edwards was from Parkville, but he had the same name and the same illness that claimed golfer Tom Watson's caddy: ALS or Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
He was diagnosed in January of 2009. Bruce spent the next three years fighting a valiant fight. Helped by the ALS Association’s Keith Worthington Chapter, Bruce went to work helping them. His “Bruce’s Battalion” team became a fixture at the annual ALS Walk. Over the next three years, Bruce raised $60,000 for ALS.
Knowing there is no cure for ALS, Bruce took each day as it came and made the most of his time with his wife Janie and two sons.
When we visited with him in 2010, he said “Believe me, I sit here today looking like I'm good with it. But there are days I am not. You caught me on a good day.”
Bruce passed away on Thursday, January 26th, with his family by his side.
Knowing that his time was near, just a few weeks ago, Bruce launched the “Bruce Edwards ALS Promise Fund.” His goal: to rally Bruce’s Battalion to raise $100,000 for ALS in 5 years.
