Police capture suspected driver wanted in afternoon hit-and-run school bus crash

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The driver wanted in a hit-and-run crash that toppled a local school bus was taken into custody Thursday night.

A tipster called police saying the man was at a home in the 7200 block of Bales, suffering from shock and a broken hand. He was taken out of the house on a stretcher just before 8 p.m., accompanied by police.

Four kids and one adult were injured when the bus rolled over onto its side after the crash, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. Thursday at 67th and Askew. The driver of the other car involved fled the scene on foot.

Six kids were on the bus headed from the Success Academy at Knotts Elementary School. All the injuries were minor and treated on the scene.

Ten-year-old Darius was on the bus when it crashed.

"I was sitting in the seat, and I felt me flying over to the other side of the bus, and then my friend helped me up and carried me out," he recalled.

His mother, Tamesha Henderson, is thankful all the students were able to walk away from the wreck. But his grandmother had a suggestion.

"Buses need seat belts, they really do," Chesna Henderson explained. "He flew from one side to the other side."

The bus knocked down a power line when it crashed, according to KCP&L. Around 1,200 customers lost power around 5 p.m. Power was restored by 7 p.m.
