SHAWNEE, Kan. - Two people were rescued from a balcony of a burning apartment building Tuesday night in Shawnee.
The fire started a little after 8:30 p.m. in the Fox Run apartment complex at 76th and Goddard Avenue.
A total of 24 units were damaged, authorities said. Half of those were destroyed, with residents of the other half likely having to stay somewhere else for several days.
Several people said they heard smoke alarms in the building in time to get out of the fire.
“I’m very grateful for the smoke alarms going off. I’m very grateful I came home when I did,” resident Maria Hammerschmidt said. “I’m very lucky to be here”
Fire crews from Shawnee, Lenexa, and Merriam were called to the scene. Crews remained on scene until about 5 a.m. Wednesday.
No injuries were reported.
