SHAWNEE MISSION, Kan. - A Corinth Elementary School official confirmed to 41 Action News the Shawnee Mission School District on Monday asked schools in the district to be on lockdown and not allow children to go out for recess.
Teachers at Overland Park Elementary school were also told to lock their doors and to not allow students to leave the building.
All schools released students at the normal time of 3:10 p.m., however no one is being allowed to enter the school buildings.
The alert comes after Overland Park police received information about a possible threat from a student on Monday that involved an Odessa teenager who got into an altercation over the weekend with students from the Shawnee Mission School District.
Police said the teenager may have made threats to harm students in the district, however 41 Action News has not been able to confirm the threat resulted in today’s lockdown.
The alert to parents was met with criticism, where some said the district's response should not have been so delayed.
Shawnee Mission School District Communication Director Leighann Neal, said all postings were made around 3:15 p.m.
"They wanted to put out information, but the information they had was pretty limited," Neal said when asked about criticism of the district being slow to alert parents.
Neal said that as soon as the district had enough information, they made the decision to alert parents.
The Shawnee Mission School District sent out a text alert around 3:13 p.m., confirming the school was on lockdown during the day due to a “vague threat.”
The district's website also alerted parents of the lockdown saying "Classes and instruction continued as normal through dismissal."
The Overland Park Police Department sent out a press release about the possible threat. Read the full report here: http://bit.ly/1eaCxFW
