KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Cheers, chants and flags erupted when Sporting KC players flew into Kansas City International Airport Sunday. The team is fresh off celebrating their win Saturday that could clinch them the Supporter's Shield.
That, Carrie Davis, decided was well getting up early on a Sunday. She and her young daughter donned their Sporting KC gear and were a part of the crowd of a few dozen fans cheering in terminal A.
"People in Kansas City are getting fired up," she said. "We walk around and we see Sporting KC stuff everywhere. It is really great."
Sporting KC Goalkeeper Jimmy Nielsen smiled at the loyal fans that surround the team.
"Gigantic support we're getting from our fans," he said. "And, you know, when we have moments when we're struggling a little bit, the fans are behind us and they lift us."
Nielsen said he'll be glued to the game between the New York Red Bulls and the Chicago Fire. If New York loses, Sporting KC will win the Supporter's Shield.
