State agencies start investigations into JJs site

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Missouri Public Service Commission, the regulator body for utilities in the state of Missouri, started its investigation on Thursday into the Feb. 19 explosion at JJ’s Restaurant.

Missouri Gas and Energy as well as Occupational Safety and Health Administration crews were on at the explosion site on Thursday.

According to the official order, the initial investigation by Missouri Gas Energy workers indicates natural gas was released from an underground distribution line when it was breached by a contractor.

The explosion killed one person and injured several others.

A spokesperson for the agency said investigators inspect the scene, conduct interviews and review records to determine if any violations in pipeline safety regulations occurred.

If investigators find violations, they then file a case with the circuit court. It is up to a judge to decide if anyone should face any penalties.

The order also sets a timeline for the Missouri Public Service Commission. They hope to have it concluded by June 27. They also are asking for status updates on March 27, April 24 and May 29.
