KANSAS CITY, Mo. - A year after a Kansas City college student was shot and killed, a program in his honor is helping kids.
On Thursday night, 15 children took part in the Mir Swim Club at the Linwood Family YMCA in Kansas City. It was named in honor of the 19-year-old Samir Clark, who was killed last year by a stray bullet at a northland apartment complex.
The club teaches children how to swim and survive in the water.
Clark worked at the YMCA.
“Sometimes when I would come up here to the Y and bring him lunch, he would be there in the office part and I would be like ‘What you doing, you’re supposed to be out there teaching kids’ He said, “Mama, I am, it’s hot out there,”’ said friend Sonya Cherry.
A fundraiser for the club will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Linwood YMCA.
