OVERLAND PARK, Kansas - Jeff Hanson has a spirit that is much like the artwork he creates; bright happy and cheerful.
It would easy to understand if Jeff felt otherwise considering what he has been forced to overcome in his 17 years of life. His creativity is well known in Kansas City and in charitable circles throughout the nation for art he creates and the gifts he gives back.
Jeff has a congenital condition called neurofibromatosis that was diagnosed when he was 6.
It resulted in a tumor on his optical nerve that Jeff named “The Clod.”
Throughout his childhood The Clod kept Jeff busy with doctors, hospital visits, radiation and chemotherapy. It also stole much of Jeff’s sight and left him with learning disabilities.
In the midst of this, Jeff says he never really felt sorry for himself, even when it came to chemo.
“Okay, I’m going to do chemo cause I know I gotta,” is the way Jeff remembers it.
Back then, Jeff was not an artist.
“We can’t even draw stick men,” he smiles.
But as his eyesight faded, something else came into focus; a talent for creating dramatic and colorful paintings that turn heads and touches hearts.
In the past several years Jeff has painted hundreds of works that have sold for thousands at charitable auctions in Kansas City and around the world.
He is now painting for private collectors. His inspiration comes from unusual spots.
“Mostly travels, magazine ads or fabrics or patterns for swimsuits,” Jeff muses.
His generosity and his talent have taken him to some pretty lavish places, and been the introduction to some high profile people. Among his friends Jeff counts Sir Elton John.
“What I learned, what Elton John has told me if you give the world will give back in a big way or in a small way. Boy has it ever.”
Jeff has been invited to visit Warren Buffet. Last summer he spent some time at Elton John’s home. Last weekend he was honored in Orlando, Florida as a Goodwill Ambassador for Make a Wish Foundation.
Jeff credits his parents Hal and Julie Hanson with helping him turn a disability into a dream. “Mom and Dad are awesome. They have helped me a lot through this journey and they have helped make it really fun.”
Fun is a big part of Jeff’s life and his work.
His advice for others going through difficult times; “Find your gift, and try to have some fun along the way.”
