KANSAS CITY, Missouri - The options for young adults in Kansas City are ample.

With a wide array of entertainment venues, a popular art district and a promising job market, there’s plenty of opportunity for Generation X’ers in the “Paris of the Plains.”

Kiplinger, a Washington-based business publication, agrees. They’ve named Kansas City as one of their 10 Great Cities for Young Adults .

Kiplinger, in making its list, sought out healthy economies fueling job growth. More specifically, they were looking for cities with youth-friendly features such as large percentages of people under 35, low cost of living and rental costs, interesting culture, nightlife and the time you’re likely to spend in traffic on a daily basis.

Kansas City scored well in terms of low cost of living and unemployment as well as having promising jobs in business, research and technology; not to mention, the average commute is only 21 minutes. However, due to a mediocre nightlife with limited cultural contribution since the downtown development is not quite finished, Kansas City scored a bit weaker in that category. High crime rates and poor public transportation were also listed as some of Kansas City’s cons.

Kansas City held its own against other well-known cities to be elected for the top 10 best cities in the U.S. for young people starting out in the world.

Not surprisingly, cities like New York, Houston and Chicago made the list. But other smaller cities also made the cut. Austin, Texas was noted for its exceptional cultural scene fueled by music festivals, an effervescent nightlife and eclectic neighborhoods. Lansing, Michigan stood out against other mid-sized cities for its innovative technology sector.

The full list of the 10 best U.S. cities includes, in alphabetical order:

  • Chicago, IL
  • Houston, TX
  • Kansas City, MO
  • Lansing, MI
