LEE’S SUMMIT, Mo. - Emergency crews are on the scene working to recovery the body of a worker after he got trapped inside a trench.
The call came in around 1:45 p.m. at a residential construction site at the Raintree Reserve in Lee’s Summit, Mo.
The Lee’s Summit Police Department tells 41 Action News two men were working on the site near SW Ward Road and SW Drake Circle. One of the workers was on a backhoe while the other was inside the trench when the trench began to fill with dirt. The worker in the backhoe tried to warn the other man, but police say it was too late.
The two-man crew was working to connect a sewer line from a house to the city’s sewer line.
Police say the trench is about 75 feet long and up to 15 feet deep.
A neighbor who was outside when the trench collapsed said emergency crews arrived within minutes.
A Battalion Chief with the Lee’s Summit Fire Department explained that the soil is very unstable; it’s made up of clay and it becomes more unstable the deeper they dig.
Police say it could be around midnight before they are able to retrieve the body from the trench.
