PLATTSBURG, Mo. - Crews have recovered the bodies of two men who drowned in Smithville Lake Thursday night.
The Missouri Highway Patrol identified the victims are Gregory Weese, 55, of Platsburg, Mo., and John Butts, 55, of Smithville.
According to Missouri Highway Patrol Troop H Spokesman Sheldon Lyon, Butts and Weese were walking along an old road bed in shallow water. One of the men came to the end of the road, where the water gets much deeper, and went under. The second man tried to help, but both drowned.
Crews recovered the first body around 7 a.m. Friday morning. The second body was recovered just before 8 a.m.
The families of both of the victims are on the scene.
