'Time' magazine's latest cover features mom breastfeeding 3-year-old son

CINCINNATI (WCPO) - When is the appropriate age is to stop breastfeeding children? A new Time magazine cover is likely to fuel this  debate with mothers and parenting experts.

The latest issue of the magazine features a photograph of a young mother breastfeeding her 3-year-old son, who stands on chair in order to reach his mother’s breast.

The photo shows the mother and parenting blogger Jamie Lynn Grumet, 26, with her son accompanied by the headline, "Are You Mom Enough?"

The story delves into the topic of “attachment parenting” that encourages extended breast-feeding, co-sleeping and baby wearing, in which infants are physically attached to their parents by slings. The story also features Kansas City mother Dionna Ford , a proponent of this parenting style.

Time says the philosophy behind the photo to drive home the point that a child old enough to stand and breastfeed was not a typical sight.

"It was important to show that there's no stereotypical look for a mom who practices this kind of parenting," said photographer Martin Schoeller on the magazine's website.

The online buzz began when TIME tweeted the cover photo out Thursday around 10 a.m EDT. Some followers said they were offended by the photo; supporters of "attachment parenting" called it an "insult" and "inflammatory."

At 3:15 p.m EDT., TIME tweeted: Even if you breast-feed your kids past their first birthdays, it doesn't mean you're an attached parent. The tweet linked to an article asking if extended breastfeeding is more common than we think.

The issue hits newsstands Friday, May 21, 2012.
