Shawnee Mission East soccer player Tyler Rathbun dies in ATV crash in rural Miami County

MIAMI COUNTY, Kan. - A Shawnee Mission East High School student died early Sunday morning in an ATV accident in rural Miami County, Kan.

The county sheriff’s office said 17-year-old Tyler R. Rathbun of Westwood died in the crash. According to authorities, the accident happened at Victory Road and 395th St.

Rathbun was a soccer player at Shawnee Mission East.

The sheriff’s office release said he was on the ATV with three friends when it rolled over. The driver was flown to a Kansas City hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The crash is still under investigation.

Family, friends and classmates held a vigil for Tyler Sunday night at a local church. About 300 people showed up, his family said.
