INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - Police are investigating after a worker found a human fetus inside a city sewer plant Saturday morning.
According to the Jackson County Medical Examiner, who responded to the sewer pumping station near Dickinson and Mayes roads, the fetus appeared to be in the first trimester.
Police said the area in which the fetus was discovered "receives waste from thousands of locations."
Police and the medical examiner's office are conducting a joint investigation to determine exactly what happened and the cause of death for the fetus. At this point, police do not believe there was any foul play involved.
