Wounded warriors honored at Chiefs game

KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Chiefs fans may be fed up with the team's losing season, but for a few people in the stands, it was a game they won't forget.

Ismael Alvarez and two other soldiers, Bill Murphy and James Wilson, were honored at Arrowhead Stadium before the Chiefs-Raiders game on Sunday. They are all members of the Wounded Warriors Project, a nonprofit organization that helps soldiers after life-changing injuries.

"During a patrol, we came into contact, driving over an ID. It blew part of my knee off," Alvarez said, recounting how he was injured.

The tickets and invitations to the game were from the "All 32 in 17" organization -- a father-son duo that's committed to visiting every football stadium in the nation this season. They plan to take a few soldiers along to each game to share in the fun.

Matt Steichen and his father said the idea started as their bucket list project, but it soon became their way of giving back.

"We meet as strangers in the morning," Steichen said. "At every city I go to, I get two names from the Wounded Warrior project. I've never met these guys in my life. By the end of the day were best friends."

Those friendships last far beyond the fourth quarter, and help these wounded warriors know how much they are valued.
