Wyandotte County enacted emergency plan to accommodate voters ahead of the storm

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - Tuesday is not only a snow day, it is an election day. There are several communities in Kansas holding primaries.

In Kansas City, Kan., voters will narrow the list of candidates for mayor. Wyandotte County enacted its emergency plan to accommodate voters ahead of the storm.

At 63 years old, Willamae Daniels is not letting a snow storm stop her from casting her vote.

“I had a friend call me up, and he said, ‘You better get out here to vote,’ and I hurried up and got ready,” said Daniels.

The Secretary of State made the call to extend early voting hours until 7 p.m. Monday. Advanced voters waited in long lines to beat the storm and officials implemented emergency procedures.

Election Commissioner Bruce Newby said the impending snowstorm's effect on the election made for a stressful day.

"There is a lot that we have to make happen when you got to 30 polling places and knowing what the weather is going to be and trying to figure out how to make sure we have workers at the five vote centers," he said.

Tuesday, voters can cast their ballots at any one of five locations convent for them. The election will be held regardless of the storm. Daniels was glad she voted ahead of the severe weather.

“I am going to buy a few groceries, and then I am going in for the day and look out my window and watch the snow come down,” said Daniels.

Under Kansas law, no one has the authority to postpone or cancel an election.
