4 children, 1 adult dead in Baltimore house fire

BALTIMORE - Five people, including four children, are dead and three others hurt after a fire in Northeast Baltimore on Thursday morning.

The fire broke out shortly after 2 a.m. on Denwood Avenue near Thurgood Marshall High School

Firefighters arriving at the scene found the home engulfed in flames and smoke billowing into the sky.

One person jumped from a second floor window to escape and was taken to an area burn center for treatment.

One firefighter was hurt when he fell through the second story floor all the way to the basement. He was found immediately and pulled from the house. He was hospitalized, but expected to be okay.

Fire investigators are now on the scene trying to figure out what caused the fire, but they believe it started in the basement of the home. Its not clear if the smoke alarms in the home were working when the fire started.

According to family members, 9 to 10 people from three generations lived in the home. They say Nancy Worrell, the 55-year-old grandmother in the home, died in the fire.

According to the family, the children who died were a 1-year-old boy, 2-year-old girl, 4-year-old boy and 7-year-old Tykia Manley.

Family say four people were able to escape the fire, including the mother of the 2- and 4-year-olds. She was holding a 2-month-old baby boy when she jumped out of the living room window.
