GROTON, Conn. (AP) - State police say the University of Connecticut's Avery Point Campus is "under control" after the report of an armed man on campus triggered an evacuation late Monday.

A UConn spokeswoman says a despondent man threatened to harm himself and had crawled beneath a dock.

A local TV station reports that police negotiators talked with him and the standoff ended. There's no word on the man's condition.

Following the report of a gunman on campus, an emergency alert was posted on the school's website ordering an evacuation.

It's not known if the man has any connection to the university.
