KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Students and community groups protested a proposed immigration bill Friday at Union Station.
Sen. Will Kraus from Lee’s Summit wants Missouri public schools to verify the legal status of not just their students but also the students' parents.
Kraus also wants law enforcement agents to have that right.
Immigration activists fear the law would break the trust between police and the community.
"It creates the paranoia of am I going to get deported in school, right? School is supposed to be a safe zone for me, where you just learn,” said Ricardo Quinones of KCMO Dream Alliance.
Missouri lawmakers are still debating the bill. Arizona and Alabama passed similar laws.
