MISSION, Kan. - UPDATE: New details in shooting bit.ly/WHV6Gs
MISSION, Kan. - A 3-year-old boy was in surgery Thursday after being shot at an apartment in Mission, Kan. Police said the gun was "out and available" when he was shot.
Capt. David Moloy said the child was shot around 2:50 p.m. Thursday. Police believe one shot was fired, which went through the boy's left arm and hit his abdomen.
The boy was at home with his father, the father's roommate and the roommate's fiance at the time.
"I believe there was a comment about the gun getting cleaned," Moloy said.
The incident is still under investigation.
Neighbors say that having police in the area is very uncommon.
"Hearing about violence ... especially when it hits children that can't defend themselves, you're obviously very worried," said neighbor Pat Burns.
According to the Johnson County Med-Act, the boy was transported from the Bridges at Foxridge complex to Children's Mercy Hospital.
The boy's mother reportedly arrived home after the shooting.
Earlier this month, a 4-year-old girl was shot in the head by another child after a gun was left on a chair in a Kansas City home. Trinity Ross eventually died from her injuries.
