SHAWNEE, Kan. - Christmas was on the minds of hundreds of Johnson County residents Saturday, even though it was the third weekend in July.
More than 300 people attended a pancake breakfast at Shawnee Town 1929 that served as a fund- and awareness-raiser for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau.
In addition to food and music, there were old-fashioned games for children to play on the grounds.
Each December the bureau, a non-denominational, non-profit organization, operates a nine-day holiday shop that serves 13,000 low-income Johnson County citizens with toys, clothing and personal-care items. The shop will be at the Great Mall of the Great Plains once again this year.
All clients are referred to the bureau by other helping agencies. Clients must have young children at home and earn no more than 150 percent of the federal poverty level.
