OVERLAND PARK, Kan. - Budget cuts mean three library branches in Johnson County may have to close their doors.
County Commissioners will meet with library board members at 4:00 p.m. Thursday at Central Resource Library in Overland Park to explore the future of area branches.
Workers said many people use library services, so they expect a lot of people will show up and have something to say about the cuts.
Under the proposed $1.6 million in cuts, the library system would cut 27 hours a week of services at three branches including Cedar Roe, Oak Park and Edgerton.
If the system is forced to cut more, those three branches would be forced to close altogether.
The county is requiring reductions for 2013 and 2014 budgets from all county agencies including the Johnson County Library.
Library workers said this will be difficult for many people who depend on the library’s services.
“Many of our patrons look to us as a very important aspect and vital resources in their lives as they look for jobs. Those who don't have a PC at home utilize our public PC's as they conduct a job search, so we are a vital community resource and we certainly would like to remain that way,” said Kasey Riley, the communications manager.
The library board is expected to make other recommendations Thursday evening.
