MISSION, Kan. - A 3-year-old boy is reported to be in stable condition a day after apparently shooting himself while his father was cleaning his loaded handgun, according to a statement from the Mission Police Department.
The shooting happened Thursday at about 2:50 p.m. in the 6900 block of W. 52nd Place.
According to the police statement, the boy reached for the Glock 9mm when his father had his back turned.
Capt. David Moloy says it's important to use a gun lock and always treat firearms as if they're loaded.
"The father, the gun owner, was preparing to clean a handgun. He had a 9mm Glock, set it down on a bed, when he turned around, apparently, his 3 year-old boy picked up the handgun and was pulling it towards himself when it unfortunately discharged," Moloy said.
The gun went off, and a bullet hit the boy in the forearm, went into his abdomen and out of his lower body, police said.
Police are completing their investigation and will forward the case to the Johnson County District Attorney’s office for review and to determine what charges -- if any -- will be filed.
