LENEXA, Kan. - Has the city of Lenexa been quietly making a development deal that it knew residents would not like? That's a question more than 100 of those residents planned to ask city council members Tuesday night.
Block Development Co. plans on building a 120,000 square foot business and industrial space close to College and Renner roads. The farmland in that area sits next to an Olathe subdivision.
Block planned to ask the Lenexa City Council to give its $100 million plan the go ahead Tuesday night.
Olathe resident Mike Meyers said he and other neighbors closest to the site weren't told about the developer's plans until a few weeks ago.
He said he was only given 10 minutes to protest to proposal, and his petition to delay the process was denied.
Meyers said he wonders if the city of Lenexa treated him differently because he lives in adjacent Olathe, just a football field away from where the $100 million proposed site could be built.
"Do they see us as neighbors or as citizens of Olathe?" he said. "I don't know."
The developer's attorney, Curtis Holland, said they have followed all the city and state laws in notifying residents about the plan -- no matter what city.
Holland said they have deliberately designed the industrial space with the nearby residents in mind, explaining they have separated the areas with a conservation area, a berm and fancy landscaping.
"We haven't been meeting secretly with city staff, under the cover of night. That's not what's happening at all," he said.
The city council meets to hear the developer's plan, public comment and to possibly vote on the issue at 7 p.m. Tuesday. Mitch Weber is attending the meeting and will have updates at 10 p.m. on 41 Action News.
