KANSAS CITY, Kan. - What was once a two-alarm fire at a Kansas City, Kan., recycling center was still smoldering hours later, and a fire department spokesman said it will likely stay that way for a while.

Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department Assistant Chief Craig Duke says his crews were called about 4 a.m. to the Deffenbaugh recycling center, 2402 S. 88th Street.

An employee arrived around 3:30 a.m. and smelled smoke, but could not immediately identity a source, Duke said. By the time the fire was located, it had grown out of control.

Heavy smoke and flames were showing when the first firefighters arrived on scene.

The fire was under control within an hour, but smoke continued to billow out of the building.

Duke said the fire caused about $1.5 million in damage.
